Hoiho and not much else!

Dear all
If you thought we were lazy yesterday, then today really takes the biscuit. We have not had a 'lazy Sunday' since we started our travels & although it was Tuesday we decided to have an impromptu one.  This would mean another day in Moeraki, but the whole place including the crib were just so peaceful we could resist - especially when it meant another night in a bed rather than a thin foam mattress in the camper van!!
We spent the day doing admin, reading, having a long lunch and generally chilling. However, we started to feel a bit guilty late afternoon so we wondered over to the lighthouse where there is a small colony of extremely rare Yellow-eyed penguins.  They tend to spend all day out fishing and return early evening to feed their chicks. They are also really shy so the DOC have built a hide and then fenced off the rest of the beach area so you have a restricted but sensitive viewpoint of these very amusing creatures. The beach had about 30 seals slobbed out around the sand and the rocks, but within a few of minutes of arriving one pooped up out of the surf and started up the beach. They look very comical as they hop and waddle over the land to the sanctity of their nest and waiting chicks (which we couldn't see) and they also wag their little pointy tails as they walk which really looks funny. They are also known here as Hoiho - Maori for 'noisy', but we didn't actually hear any of them utter so much as a squeak so cant comment on that! In all we saw six, which when comparing to the numbers seem by other guest entries at the crib was pretty good so we went back to the crib very happy (well Dean went to the pub to celebrate!).
Boulders tomorrow!
Night
Hugs
Sara
