Today we did the tourist bit and walked over to the Te Kaihinaki (ancient boulders) about 2km around the bay from the crib. This is one of the main reasons tourists stop at Moeraki although they don't usually come into the town as there is a direct route to the beach straight off the highway (thankfully). As we got nearer we realised that the whole area was mobbed with people, but a vast swath of them jumped back onto two coaches and left as we arrived - Phew!
The boulders are pretty much spherical and some are grouped and some are on their own and a couple have split open to reveal their contents. They were formed millions of years ago around some lime crystals, but to me they just looked like some giant had left his grey marbles on a huge stretch of sand. Magical!!
The day was not yet over. Dean treated me to lunch at the very lovely Fleur's place. From the outside the restaurant looks very unassuming, almost tumbling down large wooden hut, but inside is a very eclectic fish restaurant run by the ever present Fleur.
This is the first place Rick Stein insisted on visiting when offered a TV programme & his graffiti is on the back of the door! The food was absolutely amazing and the portions huge so we only managed starters and shared a dessert! I have to say if you are ever in the area do go although you will have to book a few days in advance for dinner especially at the weekend.
We really are off to Dunedin in the morning !
Hugs
Sara
